When you see people using grills, you usually see big streaks of bacon and hunks of meat sizzling away, but what if you traded these animal products for healthy alternatives that are just as tasty, or even more so.
Cooking your food on a grill is a great way to enjoy the sun and gives food a lovely smokey flavor so it is a shame when people who are vegan cannot join in on the fun.
These dishes are so good that even those around you who are not vegan will want a bite and may even encourage them to keep the raw bacon in the freezer this time.
1. Vegetable Chorizo Burger
If you like a bit of spice with your burger then you will love this veggie chorizo burger and you can have a bit of freedom with what you add to it such as tomatoes, vegan mayonnaise, and more.
You can serve it with chips, salad, or coleslaw made with vegan mayonnaise too. Veggie chorizo burgers are super easy to make as you just need to pick some up from your local store and you’re ready to throw them on the grill.
However, if you prefer to make your own veggie chorizo burgers then that is easy enough to do as well. All you will need to make these burgers are black beans, veggie chorizo, breadcrumbs, and dried chopped onions and it only takes 35 minutes to do.
2. Homemade Vegetable Hotdogs
Who knew that hotdogs could be so healthy? Even though these hotdogs have a lot less calories and fat than original ones, they do not sacrifice any flavor to achieve this. You need to gather 17 different ingredients but most of them can be found in your cabinet already.
It takes 20 minutes to prep and 45 minutes to cook and once you get the hang of it are really easy to make and they will become a staple at any family gathering.
3. Veggie Burgers
You only need 10 ingredients to make these burgers, and you can cook them knowing that they will not fall apart on the grill.
The method in which you make these burgers is straightforward and you just need to blend toasted walnuts with spices, sauté the onion, mash the black beans, and add the remaining ingredients.
The only part of this recipe that might be a bit tricky is the stirring and mashing part that must be done to combine all the ingredients before rolling into burger shape.
4. Cumin-Grilled Tofu
This is a super easy recipe because all you need to do is use paper towels to remove any excess moisture from the tofu before mixing lime juice, agave nectar, vegan soy sauce, and cumin in a bowl.
Then use this mixture to marinade the tofu in a zip lock bag for about an hour. Once marinated you can go ahead and grill the tofu until lightly browned.
A papaya salsa goes really well with this tofu and is highly advised that you spend a few minutes making it to serve with it.
5. Tofu Tacos
Another recipe that you can try with tofu is tacos, everyone loves tacos and once they know how much healthier these tacos are compared to the usual ones they may never look back.
To make the tofu pop and take center stage, it is required that you marinade it for about two hours in cumin, smoked paprika, and lime juice.
Once you have done this the only other things you have to do is chop up onions and cabbage and toss them in olive oil, lemon juice, and salt and pepper. Then slice some avocado while the tortillas are cooking on the grill.
6. Beetroot And Hummus Stuffed Pittas
This is a neat little meal that you can whip up in no time. You only need five ingredients for this dish that consist of beetroot, olive oil, salt, hummus, and of course pita breads with pockets so you can easily slide the delicious filling inside.
You can also add lettuce to the filling if you like a bit of crunch and if you’re not a particular fan of beetroots you can toss them in some herbs such as thyme.
7. Portobello Mushrooms
You may scoff when you hear that portobello mushrooms can be a substitute for steak but once you try this recipe you will be converted. It only takes 30 minutes, and you only have to marinade the mushrooms before chucking them on the grill.
To make sure that the mushrooms sear properly when you cook them, it is important to heat the pan or grill sufficiently before adding them. You will know if you have done this right if they sizzle as you add them.
8. Pineapple And Tofu Kebabs
Get into the true vegan BBQ spirit and serve some vegan and gluten free kebabs. You can have them on their own for a light meal but they do best along side a veggie burger. First make the marinade and thread the tofu, bell pepper, pineapple, and onion onto skewers.
Then place them in a baking tray, pour the marinade over them and let them sit for a few hours before adding them to the grill. An important tip to remember with this recipe is to soak the skewers in water before you use them so that they don’t burn.
9. Eggplant With Herbed Quinoa
This is an easy, light recipe that will probably become a regular occurrence in your kitchen.
Eggplants can be a pain with the moisture they secrete and can make recipes soggy but for this dish you do not have this problem as there are a couple of steps you can take to prevent it from happening so that you can get the best out of your eggplant.
The first thing you must do is cur them into 1 ½ rounds and sprinkle them with salt to set aside for 30 minutes which will get them to release water. Then you rid of any excess moister, press them between paper towels before you grill them.
10. Quinoa Bowl
This quinoa bowl is not just any quinoa bowl, because this one has wonderful smokey flavors from the grilled vegetables and paired with an adobe sauce makes a meal that you will never want to end.
The dressing for this dish is a fantastic addition to drizzle over the top of the quinoa and vegetables and is easy to do. Combine olive oil, adobo sauce, vinegar, chipotle peppers, garlic, and salt into a blender and whiz it all up until it is of a liquid consistency.
11. Cauliflower Steak Burgers
An interesting thing about this recipe is that it is not pretending to be anything other than cauliflower. It doesn’t look like meat and its quite refreshing to know that it doesn’t have to pretend to be meat to be good.
It is easy to change this recipe into a vegan friendly one as you only have to replace the cheese and mayonnaise with vegan alternatives.
12. Mediterranean Avocadoes Stuffed With Chickpeas And Tahini
The finished product of this dish is a cute pile of chickpeas sitting happily inside of a grilled avocado with a drizzle of tahini on top and if that doesn’t make you want to take a bite then nothing will.
This dish works perfectly as a side dish or as a snack and is packed full of nutrients as well as delicious. Since it is quite simple, it only requires nine ingredients and 35 minutes of your time which is a small price to pay for such great food.
13. Vegetable Sandwich With Pesto
For this recipe, you can either buy pesto from a store or make it yourself, the choice is yours and either way the sandwich will taste amazing.
The selection of vegetables used for this sandwich are zucchini, red bell peppers, yellow squash, and fresh basil which makes this a perfect, light sandwich to enjoy in the summertime. Pair these vegetables with a crusty roll and you have the perfect combination of texture as well.
14. Baby Potatoes With Rosemary
If you are just looking for a vegan friendly side that you can cook on your grill then the humble potato is a great crowd pleaser. When baby potatoes are made on the grill, they are left with a crispy, slightly charred outside and a creamy, sweet inside.
Beware though because they are quite addictive so make sure you make enough for everyone!
15. Caesar Salad
There is nothing boring about a Caesar salad done right, and a salad that is grilled acquires a delicious smokey flavor whilst still being a very healthy, low calorie meal. To prevent the lettuce from sticking, it is important to oil it slightly and then season it with salt and pepper before adding to the grill.
This salad has white beans or any other preferred legume that you are to marinate in some lemon, olive oil, garlic, herbs, and salt.
You wont be needing your drip tray with these recipes because they are much healthier alternatives to the usual suspects you find on a grill and are really easy to make, whatever you fancy there will be a recipe waiting for you to try before inevitably falling in love with it.
