Don’t Go Bananas! 7 Side Effects Of Eating Too Many Bananas

We all know that bananas are not only a convenient fruit (it has its own wrapper, after all), but they are also tasty and good for you.

Don't Go Bananas! 7 Side Effects Of Eating Too Many Bananas

However, did you know that if you eat too many, you are likely going to reverse all that goodness?

No, we didn’t know that either, but you will want to make sure that you keep bananas to just one a day, like most fruit.

Not only that, whilst bananas are good for you, it doesn’t make sense to make it the only fruit in your diet, or one of the main components of your diet.

This is because, despite it having some great benefits, you need to find nutrients elsewhere too.

In this article we shall take a look at not only what the banana is good for, but also why you shouldn’t eat too many. So, let’s get to it!

What Are The Benefits Of A Banana?

Bananas are great. Not only are they super delicious and good for you, but they are easy to eat due to their easy to peel skin and the fact they’re not watery and very messy (we’re looking at you, oranges).

They are good to eat as a snack, and are versatile too because they can be added to meals for extra nutritional benefits.

Not only that, they provide energy so are great to be eaten in the morning. They can protect the heart, relieve bouts of indigestion, as well as help to avoid kidney stones.

However, if you over eat this wonderful fruit, it can reverse all this goodness. So, if you are eating far too many a day, let’s look at how this can affect your body – and why you should cut down the number you eat.

#1 Cause Allergies

If you find that you are allergic to healthy foods such as kiwi, avocado or even chestnuts, then you might find that you are allergic to bananas.

If you have been suffering with mild allergic symptoms, and you tend to eat bananas (even just one), then it is worth stopping eating those bananas and to make a record of whether the symptoms have eased or not.

If they have eased, then you are allergic to bananas. If they haven’t eased, then it isn’t the bananas, so you will need to see your doctor for advice.

#2 Migraines

Not a lot of people know this, but bananas can cause severe headaches. This is because they contain something called tyramine which can affect some people and cause them to have a headache.

Just like the above, if you find that eating lots of bananas is causing you to have a bad headache, then cut down on how many you consume.

#3 Decayed Teeth

We all know that fruit is full of sugar, but so long as you eat it in moderation and look after your teeth, you should be fine.

However, just like with candy, if you eat too many, then there is a chance that you could start to suffer from tooth decay.

Bananas are known to be very high in sugar, as well as carbs. This can play havoc with your teeth causing lots of erosion to the enamel of the tooth, so it is best to leave bananas at least once a day.

#4 Low In Fat

Whilst bananas are a great snack for those who are looking to lose weight due to them containing no fat, they cannot be your only source of fruit.

We need fats for our body to function the way it should. A good way to get healthy fats is by introducing food like avocados, salmon and nuts into your diet.

Bananas cannot be the main part of your diet due to lacking nutrients elsewhere that are needed for your body to run properly.

#5 Can Cause Hyperkalemia

To put it very simply, this condition can be caused by eating too many bananas. We need to eat foods that provide us with potassium which help the nerves to function as they should, as well as the muscles.

However, too much potassium can have the opposite effect and cause us to become quite ill. If you eat an unusually high number of bananas, then you risk having a huge level of potassium in the blood.

This risks your heart health and you would need to see a doctor to see what can be done about it, which likely would be medication.

#6 Constipation

Whilst we need fiber to have healthy bowel movements, too much can cause the opposite. Annoying, right?

Bananas are full of fiber, and eating too many can cause you to struggle to go to the toilet. It can also make you feel bloated, as well as be quite gassy.

So if this is something you are suffering with, cut down the fiber!

Alos, it isn’t just constipation either. It can go the other way and cause diarrhea, as well as many other things within the digestive system.

#7 Might Interfere With Medication

If you are currently taking prescribed medication, then bananas may actually interfere with how they are absorbed.

If this is something you are worried about, then consult your doctor, especially if you have been eating a lot of bananas.

Final Thoughts

Bananas are tasty and shouldn’t be forgotten about when you want to eat a healthy snack, however, just like with most things, they are best eaten in moderation.

That’s because bananas can cause a number of unwanted stresses in the body. However, if you are eating a banana around one a day, or a few times a week, then you will have nothing to worry about.

Unless, of course, you find out that you are allergic to bananas! Hopefully this article has helped you. Find out more about fruit and food health on the rest of our website.
